Title
Proclamation declaring the Week of October 9-15, 2016 as "Fire Prevention Week" in Los Alamos County (accepted by Ramon Garcia, LAFD Wildland Division Chief)
Body
WHEREAS: Los Alamos County is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in our community; and
WHEREAS: Fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are the locations where people are at greatest risk from fire; and
WHEREAS: Smoke alarms play an essential role in home fire safety, but they must be working properly in order to protect their occupants. In a recent National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) survey, many individuals stated that they don’t know how old their smoke alarms are and don’t realize how often they need to be replaced; and
WHEREAS: Informing the public about the importance of replacing home smoke alarms is key in planning ahead for fire safety - NFPA’s National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code requires smoke alarms to be replaced every ten years, but the public is generally unaware of this requirement; and
WHEREAS: Los Alamos County residents have shown in the past that they are responsive to public education measures and willing to take personal steps to increase their safety from fire; and
WHEREAS: This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, “Don’t Wait: Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years” actively promotes the message that Los Alamos County residents should check their smoke alarms and take steps to be prepared in case of a home fire;
NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the Council of the Incorporated County of Los Alamos, I do hereby proclaim the Week of October 9 - 15, 2016 as
“FIRE PREVENTION WEEK”
in Los Alamos County, and urge our citizens to check the age of their household smoke alarms, and to participate in fire prevention events and activities sponsored by the Los Alamos Fire Department.
