Proclamation declaring the Month of October as "Drug Free Month" in Los Alamos County (accepted by LAPD Chief Dino Sgambellone)
Body
WHEREAS: It is the goal of all organizations who deal with the prevention of drug abuse to motivate people to more active participation in programs to eliminate this problem in communities - especially among our youth; and
WHEREAS: The County Council joins the Los Alamos Police Department and other community, school and local non-profit organizations who are deeply concerned that tobacco, drug and alcohol use undermine our children’s welfare; and
WHEREAS: Public entities and private citizens spend billions of dollars each year combating drug and alcohol abuse in the school, at work, throughout the community, county and country; and
WHEREAS: The long-term solution to the drug abuse and alcohol problem is prevention and education of our youth, to help them develop and maintain resiliency to anti-social behavior; and
WHEREAS: Families are being given increasing prominence in the fight against drug abuse; parents are in a unique position to monitor or change conditions in the home that can contribute to the use of drugs - such as lack of parental guidance, unacceptable role models, or peer pressure for their child to try drugs;
NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the Council of the Incorporated County of Los Alamos, I do hereby proclaim the Month of October 2016 as
“DRUG FREE MONTH”
in Los Alamos County, and encourage our community - especially families of teens who are vulnerable and most likely to try experimenting with drugs during their formative school years - to become educated about the signs of drug and alcohol abuse;
AND FURTHERMORE, we ask citizens to unite with LAPD and other local organizations in promoting healthy alternatives and activities for our youth to keep them away from tobacco, drugs and alcohol - their safety and their life may depend upon our active participation and partnerships to tackle this ...
