Update - Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Transition Plan

…Body

In March, Wilson & Company was hired to assemble an ADA Transition Plan.  The transition plan includes several components including establishing an ADA policy, performing a self-evaluation of existing pedestrian infrastructure to identify physical barriers that limit accessibility, establishing grievance/complaint procedures, identifying methods to improve accessibility, and designating a responsible official or ADA Coordinator to implement the plan.

Work on the transition plan began upon being notified by the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT), working on behalf of the Federal Highway Administration, as an effort to ensure compliance with federal ADA statutes.  NMDOT is requiring all local agencies comply with federal statute on ADA transition plans as a condition of receiving federal transportation funding.  This is a statewide effort by NMDOT that affects all municipalities.  NMDOT must also meet the same requirement by drafting their own transition plan for state facilities.  State highways under NMDOT jurisdiction like NM 502 (Trinity Drive) and NM 4 in Los Alamos must be included in NMDOT’s transition plan.

A first draft of the plan was presented to the Transportation Board during its October 5th meeting. A second draft will be presented to the Transportation Board at its November 2nd meeting, where the public will have an opportunity to provide feedback again.  The deadline to submit the plan for NMDOT review is December 22, 2017.
