Title

Incorporated County of Los Alamos Resolution No. 18-04: A Resolution Supporting the Retention and Expansion of Plutonium Pit Production at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Recommended Action

I move that Council adopt Incorporated County of Los Alamos Resolution No. 18-04, a resolution supporting the Retention and Expansion of Plutonium Pit Production at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

County Manager's Recommendation

The County Manager recommends that Council adopt Incorporated County of Los Alamos Resolution No. 18-04.

Body

There have been several recent news articles published regarding the future of pit production within the United States, with most noting that representatives of the area surrounding Savannah River National Laboratory have been suggesting that the program should be moved to that facility.  In these articles, references have been made to resolutions passed by the local governing bodies within South Carolina which support the move of the pit production mission to their local facility.  The County of Los Alamos has not taken a similar stand on this issue (i.e. has not passed a resolution detailing its support/opposition), yet a resolution passed by Santa Fe opposing this mission has been mentioned as an important factor in the decision making process.

The attached resolution is an attempt to define our local government's position on this important issue.  Concerns surrounding the future of plutonium pit production have been detailed in the 2018 Federal Agenda, to be considered earlier during this meeting, and the attached resolution conforms to the message in the proposed Federal Agenda.

Alternatives

The Council could choose to not adopt the attached resolution.
