Crosswalk at Broadview
…Body
Recently, the Los Alamos County Police Department contacted the Traffic & Streets Division regarding the loading of bussed school children in the Broadview Estates Subdivision on North Mesa. There is only one bus stop in the subdivision that is located near the intersection of Broadview Drive and Estates Drive and therefore many children board school busses at this stop. One of the main reasons there is only one stop in the subdivision is that there are limited areas suitable for a bus stop where the busses can navigate safely. The current stop is north of the intersection of the Broadview Drive and Estates Drive where there is a site visibility issue as well as an issue with children crossing Broadview Drive in random areas; many times, without looking for oncoming traffic. The Los Alamos Police Department has monitored the area, increased enforcement and has visited with parents in the subdivision to formulate a solution that would improve the situation associated with the bus stop. Additionally, there is a non-compliant ADA ramp at the northeast corner of the intersection that does not lead to another ADA sidewalk ramp; “a ramp to nowhere”.
It is proposed that a crosswalk be installed on the north side of the intersection (with associated signage), the existing curb ramp be brought into compliance and another curb ramp be installed on the west side of Broadview Drive. Adjacent to the curb ramp on the west side of Broadview Drive, a bus loading pad would also be installed (see exhibit). The proposed work would encourage students to cross at the crosswalk (with the encouragement and coaching of police staff, schools staff and parents) and improve the ADA accessibility in the area. Once the work is completed, the bus stop would be moved to the south to the newly constructed student loading area, improving site visibility of the bus stop in general.
It is estimated the total cost of the project would be approximately $15...
