County Manager's Recommendation
The County Manager does not make a recommendation with regard to this Petition.
Body
On June 18,2019, Ann LePage submitted a petition on behalf of 42 people, at least 5 of whom are registered voters of Los Alamos County, calling on the County Council to ban the use and distribtution of plastic bags, plastic straws, and styrofoam containers. The petition is contained in Attachment A.

As provided for in the Los Alamos County Code, the Council shall place on the agenda of its next regular meeting the subject of any written request signed by five or more qualified voters of the County and presented to the county clerk at least ten (10) days prior to that meeting. This item is being placed on the Council agenda for acknowledgement and possible discussion and/or action.

It should be noted that a citizen petition was previously submitted in 2015 requesting that "Council pass an ordinance prohibiting retail establishments from distributing single-use plastic carryout bags to their customers and mandating a $0.10 fee on paper bags to be collected and retained by the merchant."
