Title

Approval of Relocation of "Apache Harvest" and Expenditure of Art in Public Places Funds

Recommended Action

I move that the Council approve the de-installation of the bronze sculpture Apache Harvest from the west end of Ashley Pond and its transport to and installation on a new concrete base in the courtyard of the White Rock Senior Center and the expenditure of Art in Public Places Funds for this relocation, not to exceed $3,000.

Board Recommendation

The Board took action at the March 28, 2019 meeting to recommend the approval of  this expenditure of Art in Public Places Funds to Council.

Body

The bronze sculpture titled Apache Harvest, by Craig Goseyun, currently located to the west of Ashley Pond has been in the Los Alamos County Public Art Collection since 1993. In a review of art locations and its visual impact by the Art in Public Places Board, it has been determined that, for such a substantial piece, its visual impact is not optimized in its current location. After exploring multiple options for a new location, the courtyard of the White Rock Senior Center was suggested and agreed upon as an optimal new location. It is continuously accessible to the public, it provides a balance to sculpture currently near that location and enriches the collection of public art currently in White Rock. The Art in Public Places Board gathered public comment at the White Rock Senior Center, and it was overwhelmingly positive.
