...County Manager's Recommendation
The County Manager recommends that Council adopt Incorporated County of Los Alamos Resolution No. 24-04.
Board, Commission or Committee Recommendation
The Council Regional and State Working Group recommends the approval of this resolution.
Body
Paid Family and Medical Leave would allow New Mexicans, including members of the military and their families, to take time off to deal with major familial issues such as such as childbirth, bereavement for the loss of a child, medical care, care of a relative with an illness or a situation involving domestic abuse for up to 12 weeks of leave. New Mexicans availing themselves of this leave would be eligible if they have contributed to the fund for at least six months during the twelve-month period prior to submitting an application, not including contributions made for other employment that the self-employed individual will continue during the leave. Only businesses with more than five employees will be required to pay into the fund.
The resolution of support is shown in Attachment A and the publication notice is shown in Attachment B. For information on additional requirements and compensation, the proposed legislation is attached (Attachment C).
Alternatives
Council could not approve this resolution and therefore, not indicate their support of paid family and medical leave.
Fiscal and Staff Impact/Unplanned Item
There is minimal staff impact but the fiscal impact to the County is estimated to be approximately $210,000. This amount is the employer's share to participate in the program as defined in the proposed legislation.
