Consideration and Possible Action on the 2026 Los Alamos Federal Priorities

Recommended Action

I move that Council approve the 2026 Los Alamos Federal Priorities.

County Manager's Recommendation

The County Manager recommends that Council approve the motion as presented.

Board, Commission or Committee Recommendation

The County Council's Federal Legislative Working Group recommends approval of the 2026 Los Alamos Federal Priorities as presented.

Body

Annually, the Los Alamos County Council adopts a "Federal Agenda."  The document is used as a guide for our intergovernmental efforts at the federal level.  The agenda is developed through the Council's Federal Legislative Working Group that meets to produce the message and recommended County priority topics. 

 

Attachment A shows the 2025 Los Alamos Federal Priorities that was approved in January 2025.

 

Attachment B is the version of the federal priorities that was developed in anticipation of Congressional meetings in March 2026.  This version includes some new items, including support for wildfire mitigation and post-fire support including a Federal Bill for a study on wildfire insurance

 

In addition, this version includes the following priorities, which are further elaborated within Attachment B:

-- Support for the missions of the Los Alamos National Laboratory

-- Support for NNSA clean up of the Hexavalent Chromium Plume and replacement for water well PM3

-- Support for ongoing mutual agreements, e.g., the Electric Coordination Agreement

-- Support for additional land conveyance

-- Support for Cleanup of TA-21/MDA-T and Rendija Canyon

-- Support for a program to assist host and neighboring DOE communities with infrastructure to fulfill the missions

-- Legislative support for appropriations and grants for County projects

-- Support for Wildfire Mitigation and post-Fire Support Legislation

-- Support for specific projects
