Approval of County Manager's Selection of Eric Martinez as Public Works Department Director

Recommended Action

I move that Council approve the appointment of Eric Martinez as Public Works Department Director. 

County Manager's Recommendation

The County Manager recommends that Council approve the motion as requested.

Body

Article III, Section 303.2 of the Los Alamos County Charter requires formal Council approval of department head appointments.  The County Manager has selected Eric Martinez to serve as Public Works Director.  This position plays a vital role in County operations as the department encompasses Administration, Airport, Engineering, Capital Projects & Facilities, Custodial, Environmental Services, Fleet, Traffic & Streets, and Transit Divisions. 

 

Eric Martinez is currently serving as the Deputy Public Works Director for Los ALamos County where he oversees Airport, Capital Project & Facilities, Fleet, and Environmental Services Divisions and the $25 Million annual operating budget for these divisions. He joined the County in 2015 and previously held the positions of County Engineer and Deputy Public Works Director.   

 

Prior to joining Los Alamos County, Mr. Martinez held various positions at City of Santa Fe including Engineering Division Manager and Roadway Development Manager.  In those roles, he managed the study, engineering design, and construction of capital projects including coordination with federal funding agencies, public and other affected parties, utilization of funds from various sources, and providing leadership and guidance to other staff and contractors.  Mr. Martinez started his career with the New Mexico Department of Transportation and worked in various management capacities. 

 

Mr. Martinez received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from New Mexico State University and is a licensed Professional Engineer and Certified Floodplain Manager.  

 

Mr. Martinez has over 29 years of public service, supervisory and leadership experience that includes technical expertise in the areas of public works, civil engineering, program and project manager for the successful implementation, maintenance and operations of public infrastructure and programs.  We believe Eric Martinez to be a good fit for the organization and the community.  His resume is shown in Attachment A.
