Body

Westnet's First-In Fire Station Alerting System offers a comprehensive solution for fire personnel, employing strategically placed remote alerting modules throughout the fire station. This system ensures rapid, secure, and technologically advanced notifications during emergencies. With its modular design, the First-In Fire Station Alerting System provides public safety agencies with affordable equipment options, ranging from basic alerting functions to maximum alerting capability, granting full control over the fire station. The Los Alamos Fire Department (LAFD) has already implemented the First-In system at Fire Station 3 in White Rock and the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has plans for the deployment of the Fire-In Alerting system across all LANL owned fire stations. This staff report discusses the proposed enhancements for Fire Station 3, scalable core components for future stations, the integration of the Fire Station Alerting System with the LAC Dispatch Center, and the potential positive impact on firefighter stress levels.

Fire Station Enhancements:

As part of the proposed quote, Fire Station 3 will receive upgraded equipment, ensuring improved functionality and performance. These enhancements will enable firefighters and EMS personnel to receive alerts promptly, enhancing their response time and overall efficiency.

Scalable Components and Cost Reduction:

To optimize cost efficiency, the remaining fire stations will be equipped with scalable core components. This approach allows for the relocation of these components as new stations are constructed, eliminating the need for redundant purchases, and reducing overall expenses. By implementing this strategy, the Department aims to maximize its budget allocation.

Integration with the LAC Dispatch Center:

Recognizing the importance of streamlined communication and coordination, the proposed plan includes the installation of equipment at the LAC Dispatch Center. This equipment will establish a link between the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) software and the Fire Station Alerting System platform. This integration will facilitate seamless information flow, ensuring that dispatches are promptly and accurately transmitted to the respective fire stations.

Funding and Collaboration:

The Department's Fire Protection Fund, distributed by the New Mexico State Fire Marshal's Office, serves as the funding source for this purchase. The County Manager and the Union have jointly advocated for measures to lower firefighter stress levels during incident dispatches. Studies have shown that, on average, heart rates nearly double within 15 seconds of an alarm sounding at a fire station, indicating a need for improved systems that minimize response time and stress. By investing in the First-In Fire Station Alerting System, the LAFD aims to reduce stress levels among its personnel, promoting their well-being and overall mental health.

The implementation of Westnet's First-In Fire Station Alerting System represents a significant step forward in enhancing the efficiency, safety, and well-being of the LAFD. With this purchase the Department aims to enhance its resources while maintaining a high level of operational readiness. The integration of the Fire Station Alerting System with the LAC Dispatch Center will establish a seamless communication channel, ensuring accurate and timely transmission of dispatches. By investing in this advanced alerting system, the LAFD demonstrates its commitment to improving firefighter stress levels, thereby fostering a healthier and more resilient workforce.
