Title

Approval of Deaccession of Public Works of Art by Mel Prueitt

Suggested Motion

I move that the County Council approve the recommendation of the Art in Public Places Board regarding the deaccession of three public works of art by Mel Prueitt.

Recommended Action

The County Administrator recommends that Council approve the suggested motion as presented.

Body

The Art in Public Places Board recommends deaccession of three works of art by Mel Prueitt, “Contemplating Liftoff”, “Chromatic Scale” and “Texture Mapping”, which were acquired into the collection in July of 1990, purchased for $350 each (Attachment A). These pieces are early computer generated graphic designs that no longer fit into the County collection.

The Art in Public Places board has followed the deaccession policy to explore options of additional appropriate places to display the art. We reached out to the Teen Center to see if the art pieces would be appropriate and fit into the décor; it was declined. We collected public comments (Attachment B) to ascertain if the public was in favor of removing the pieces from the collection, and it was met with support. If this recommendation is approved by Council, Art in Public Places will proceed with working  with Los Alamos County Procurement to finalize the deaccession process.

Fiscal and Staff Impact

No fiscal or staff impact.
