Title

Introduction of Incorporated County of Los Alamos Code Ordinance No.02-347 An Ordinance Establishing a Minimum Wage Within the Incorporated County of Los Alamos

Recommended Action

I introduce, without prejudice, Incorporated County of Los Alamos Code Ordinance No. 02-347 An Ordinance Establishing a Minimum Wage Within the Incorporated County of Los Alamos and ask the staff to assure that it is published as provided in the County Charter.

Body

As a result of presentation by local students recommending that the County raise the local minimum wage, Council held a public town hall and a local organization had two surveys of local businesses.  This code ordinance is being introduced and includes the following:

--local minimum wage of $15.00

--local minimum wage for tipped workers of $3.75

--local minimum wage for student workers of $13.50

--Effective date:  July 1, 2025

--A percent increase of these wages corresponding to the increase, if any, in the Customer Price Index for the Western Region for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers.

Proposed Public Hearing Scheduled: January 30, 2024

Alternatives

Council could not introduce this ordinance and there would not be a path forward at this time for raising the local minimum wage.

Fiscal and Staff Impact/Planned Item

There would be minimal fiscal and staff impact due to this ordinance.
