Title

Presentation of the Final Written Report on the Electrification Study and Possible Action

Recommended Action

I move that the Board of Public Utilities approve the Final Written Report on the Electrification Study and present the findings to County Council at their August 19, 2025 meeting.

Utilities Manager's Recommendation

The Utilities Manager recommends that the Board approve the motion as presented.

Body

Jacob A. Wells P.E. - Project Manager and Adam Young from 1898 & Co - a division of Burns and McDonnell Engineering Consultants, will present the final report on the electrification study commissioned by the Board of Public Utilities demonstrating their analysis on conversions of gas appliances and gasoline cars to all electric appliances and electric vehicles.  They will be available, in chambers, for questions about the report.  Their analysis will demonstrate the impact it will have on the electrical demand of Los Alamos County and the costs associated with the necessary system improvements. The report will show the upgrades needed over the next 15 and 30 years based on the rate of conversions and the growth in electrical demand on the system.  Costs have been evaluated along with options to minimize the impact of costs on the utility and consumers and these options will be presented in this final report.

In addition to costs, the final report will explain the additional considerations being studied that will include the transmission system review, wholesale power requirements, State and Federal Rules and Regulations that may impact the utility as well and any additional staffing needs that may be anticipated to upgrade and maintain the electrical distribution system.

Alternatives

The Board could choose not to approve the report.

Fiscal and Staff Impact/Planned Item

None at this time.
