Proclamation Designating September 15th Through October 15th, 2026, as "National Hispanic Heritage Month in Los Alamos County." (Accepted by Los Alamos County Employees)
Body
WHEREAS, Los Alamos County honors the histories, cultures, traditions, and contributions of those of us whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America; and,
WHEREAS, Hispanic heritage is part of the DNA of American culture, influencing education, art, science, health care, technology, business, activism, agriculture, public safety, infrastructure, economic development, and governance; especially in New Mexico where the Hispanic community has been deeply rooted for more than 480 years and Spanish is one of the two official languages in the state; and,
WHEREAS, Los Alamos County is proud of its Hispanic residents, elected and public officials, and employees, and recognizes that when we embrace diversity and celebrate multicultural heritages, we become a stronger and better County, neighbor, state, and nation; and,
WHEREAS, Los Alamos County libraries will host New Mexico's poet laureate, Manuel González, on Saturday, September 19 at 2 p.m. where he’ll share details about his writings and the ways his poetry grows through practice, community, and persistence.
NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the Council for the Incorporated County of Los Alamos, I do hereby proclaim September 15th though October 15th, 2026 as
“National Hispanic Heritage Month in Los Alamos County”
We encourage all citizens to commemorate Hispanic culture by enjoying Hispanic art through books, music, or films; meeting Manuel González and learning about his creative journey; or frequenting one of our Hispanic-owned businesses.
