Recognition for Special Olympic Athletes Participating in Jemez Mountain Trail Run

WHEREAS, the Jemez Mountain Trail Runs has been organized in Los Alamos by the High Altitude Athletics Club and Atomic City Road Runners for 19 years, encouraging all to enjoy our beautiful trails and open spaces, as well as engage in healthy habits and promote wellbeing; and,
WHEREAS, New Mexican athletes with intellectual disabilities have been discovering new strengths and success through the power of sport since Special Olympics New Mexico (SONM) was incorporated in 1977, forging a better community of acceptance and inclusion; and,
WHEREAS, Adam Trubow and Art Montoya were instrumental in spearheading the movement to get two inspiring athletes training, guidance, and support in order to participate in the Jemez Mountain Trail Runs; and,
WHEREAS, on May 9, 2026, two inspiring athletes with intellectual disabilities joined the 19th Annual Jemez Mountain Trail Runs. Bella Sieberg completed the 15-mile run, powering though 2,283 feet of elevation gain and Ben Blewett completed the 50K run, undertaking 31.6 miles of rugged mountain terrain and 5,869 feet of elevation gain. This is the kind of joy and fulfillment our community can achieve when all individuals are included and celebrated; and,
WHEREAS, Jemez Mountain Trail Runs displayed exemplary natural resource protection by partnering with Los Alamos County Environmental Services Division, the Environmental Sustainability Board, and the Los Alamos Sustainability Alliance by creating a zero-waste sorting station. With the help of participants, hundreds of pounds of waste were diverted to recycling, reuse and composting, promoting Los Alamos County’s strategic goal of Environment Stewardship.
