Proclamation Declaring September 2026 as "National Suicide Prevention Month In Los Alamos" (Accepted by Jamie Allbach, Social Services Division Program Specialist)

WHEREAS, mental health disorders transcend all demographic boundaries and impact millions of Americans and their families, friends, and communities, including Los Alamos County; and,
WHEREAS, suicide is a significant public health issue-the second leading cause of death among 10 to 34-year-olds-especially in New Mexico where we are the fourth highest state for deaths by suicide; and,
WHEREAS, Los Alamos County Social Services and the County Health Council are raising awareness about issues related to mental health and suicide prevention by offering suicide prevention trainings and connecting people in crisis to life-saving resources; and,
WHEREAS, local organizations such as JJAB, Los Alamos Public Schools, Los Alamos Retired and Senior Organization, Family Strengths Network, LA Cares, Self Help and many others collaboratively provide a safety net to give hope and resources to as many people as possible; and,
WHEREAS, Los Alamos County publicly supports those who work in mental health, substance use, education, and law enforcement.
NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the Council for the Incorporated County of Los Alamos, I do hereby proclaim the month of September 2026 as
“National Suicide Prevention Month in Los Alamos County”
I call upon all residents to seek mental health and suicide prevention resources through the Social Services Division and to participate in events promoting mental health awareness and suicide prevention taking place throughout September, including attending an ABC Suicide Prevention training; a Mental Health First Aid training, joining a forest-guided therapy walk, or checking out any of the other resources available in our community;
