Title
Approval of Appointment of Wendy Servey as Interim Los Alamos County Fire Chief
Recommended Action
I move that the Council appoint Wendy Servey as Interim Los Alamos County Fire Chief.
County Manager's Recommendation
The County Manager recommends that Council approve the recommended action.
Body
Upon the retirement of Fire Chief Troy Hughes, whose last day in the office was April 26, 2025, Deputy Fire Chief Wendy Servey has been recommended by the County Manager to fill the role of Fire Chief, on an interim basis. If approved, the term for this interim appointment is starting on May 7, 2025 and shall terminate on May 6, 2026, upon the employment of a new Fire Chief, provided there may be some overlap. The full time Fire Chief position will be advertised and recruited through a nationwide search.
Wendy Servey began her EMS/fire service career in 1997 for Cleveland EMS, then quickly transitioned to the fire service as a firemedic for Coventry Fire near Akron, Ohio. In 2004, she moved to New Mexico and started with Santa Fe County Fire Department. In 2006, she joined the Los Alamos Fire Department, completing her third academy. Deputy Chief Servey has spent over 28 years in the fire service, with the last ten years changing to leadership roles at LAFD, including assignments as Battalion Chief of Safety, Operations, Fire Marshal and Deputy Fire Chief.
Deputy Chief Servey has an Associate Degree in Fire Science, a Bachelor of Science degree in Technology, and a graduate of the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer Program in 2019.
Alternatives
Council could decide to not appoint an Interim Fire Chief, which does leave the Senior Management leadership vacancy for this critical role in the community.
