Title

Consideration of Sending Letter from the Incorporated County of Los Alamos Council to the Carson National Forest Supervisor Opposing Uranium Exploratory Drilling in Carson National Forest

Recommended Action

I move that Council support sending a letter of opposition to the uranium exploratory drilling in Carson National Forest, and authorize the Chair to sign the letter on behalf of the County Council.

Body

Chair Ryti requested that Council discuss whether or not the Council supports sending a letter of opposition, similar to the letters the New Mexico federal delegation (Attachment A) and Santa Fe County Council (Attachment B), to the Carson National Forest Supervisor James Duran. The letter would oppose drilling activities in Carson National Forest to protect the Chama watershed and require a National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) review and full Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) before any permit decisions are made.

Alternatives

Council could choose not to send a letter to the Carson National Forest Supervisor.
