Title

Update and Discussion Regarding Traffic Safety

Body

On October 22, 2024, Police Chief Sgambellone and then Public Works Director Juan Rael presented information and strategies to council surrounding traffic and road safety given some motor vehicle accidents and fatalities that occurred around that time.  Since then, the Los Alamos Police Department continues to make progress with implementation of an Automated Speed Enforcement Program and enhancing penalties related to the prohibition of handheld phones while driving.

Two recent pedestrian crashes have put a spotlight on traffic safety resulting in many citizen concerns and inquiries. As a result, a Traffic and Road Safety Task Force was formed comprised of members of the Public Works Department, Police Department, Fire Department, and the County Manager’s Office including Communications and Public Relations Staff.

This team discusses strategies and various initiatives including public outreach, educational campaigns, studies, and various projects in process to help address traffic and road safety issues.  An overview of crash statistics along with traffic safety related activities, projects, enforcement and education initiatives completed and underway will be discussed and presented by Keith Wilson, Deputy Public Works Director and Police Chief Dino Sgambellone.  A presentation was also made to the Transportation Board on May 7, 2026.
