Proclamation declaring April as "J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee Month" (accepted by Tom Ribe)

WHEREAS: The J. Robert Oppenheimer Memorial Committee was established to promote the spirit and memory of J. Robert Oppenheimer through lectures, scholarships, and other community activities and was officially incorporated by the state just over 50 years ago to create a memorial committee to support these efforts; and
WHEREAS: J. Robert Oppenheimer, the Director of the Manhattan Project, and known as “Mr. Los Alamos,” is remembered not only for his exceptional achievements, but also for the extraordinary impact of his intellect and personality in the Los Alamos community and as the leader who chose this beautiful place as inspiration for the scientists who came here; and
WHEREAS: The Committee honors J. Robert Oppenheimer’s passion for education by awarding scholarships to high school seniors in Los Alamos, Pojoaque, and Santa Fe totaling $668,000 through 2021; and
WHEREAS: The Committee continues its strong support of regional science fairs and is expanding partnerships with STEM-sponsoring organizations to broaden science support and engagement to younger students; and
WHEREAS: The Committee is dedicated to annual efforts to engage and inspire others by bringing outstanding thinkers from diverse backgrounds to the community to provide accessible lectures on current and relevant issues of scientific, cultural, and environmental interest; and
WHEREAS: The Committee continues to encourage citizens who support these activities to contribute funds that will sustain and grow the impact on educational support and scientific dialogue;
NOW, THEREFORE, on behalf of the Council of the Incorporated County of Los Alamos, I do hereby proclaim April 2022 as
“J. ROBERT OPPENHEIMER MEMORIAL COMMITTEE MONTH”
