Title

Distribution System Electrification Study

Body

Jacob A. Wells P.E. - Project Manager and Adam Young from 1898 & Co - a division of Burns and McDonnell Engineering Consultants, presented their final report on the electrification study to the Board of Public Utilities at their regular meeting on July 16, 2025.  This report was commissioned by the BPU and demonstrates analysis on conversions of gas appliances and gasoline cars to all electric appliances and electric vehicles. Their analysis demonstrates the impact it will have on the electrical demand of Los Alamos County and the costs associated with the necessary system improvements. The report shows the upgrades needed over the next 15 and 30 years based on the rate of conversions and the growth in electrical demand on the system. Costs have been evaluated along with options to minimize the impact of costs on the utility and consumers.

In addition to costs, the final report explains the additional considerations that include the transmission system review, wholesale power requirements, State and Federal Rules and Regulations that may impact the utility as well and any additional staffing needs that may be anticipated to upgrade and maintain the electrical distribution system.

The final study is available on the Department of Public Utilities page of the Los Alamos County public website.  Search for "Electrification Study 2025" or click on the link below:
