Discussion and Possible Approval of Purchase Agreement for Los Alamos School of Gymnastics
Recommended Action
I move that Council approve the purchase of the Los Alamos School of Gymnastics Building, located at 555 North Mesa Road, in the amount of $500,000 and authorize the County Manager to move forward with executing the Purchase Sale Agreement and close on the real-estate transaction.

In March 2025, the Los Alamos School of Gymnastics (LASG) approached Los Alamos County to determine whether the County would be interested in purchasing the LASG building. The building is located at 555 N. Mesa Road and sits on land owned by the County. LASG has leased the property from the County since 1987, allowing the organization to maintain and operate its gymnastics organization in their building on County-owned land.
The current lease agreement is set to expire in 2027. Under the terms of that agreement, LASG is responsible for removing the building when the lease ends.
To further evaluate options, Los Alamos County commissioned an appraisal of the LASG building. The appraisal determined that the 10,500-square-foot building has an as-is value of $545,000. Because the structure is several decades old, any acquisition by the County would likely require a substantial investment in maintenance and repairs. The County also explored the alternative of removing the building and obtained a demolition estimate of $263,000, and a purchase price of $500,000 was agreed upon.
Los Alamos Public Schools has expressed interest in the LASG building, and the School Board may consider a future land-swap arrangement with the County.
Council held an initial discussion on this topic during the June 9, 2026 allowing for questions from Council and the public.
