Amendment to the FY22 Salary Plan with the addition of a new Lifeguard Trainee job description.

Recommended Action

I move that Council approve the amendment to the FY22 Salary Plan with addition of a new Lifeguard Trainee job description.

County Manager's Recommendation

The County Manager recommends that Council approve the motion as requested.

Body

The Community Services Department has identified the need for a new, entry level new Lifeguard Trainee job description. Past recruitment difficulties have indicated that an entry level, trainee position would be beneficial because many applicants lack the minimum qualification of  possessing a current American Red Cross certification in Lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer or equivalency. In order for the department to fill vacancies, especially during the pandemic, and with the new aquatic facility opening, having an entry level trainee position would allow for a larger applicant pool to interview and hire from and a training phase for us to "grow" our own Lifeguards.  It is recommended that the grade for Lifeguard Trainee be a Grade 114 ($15.39 - $23.82) FLSA Non-Exempt. This rate is in line with the Lifeguard position and, upon completion of this “training” period, the employee would then be eligible for promotion into the higher level positions (Lifeguard, Senior Lifeguard or Lifeguard Supervisor). 

 

The creation and implementation of the Lifeguard Trainee job description will not increase the amount of FTE’s in Community Services. As stated above, adding this position will simply allow a larger applicant pool to be considered. The Community Services budget will not change. .

Alternatives

Council could choose to not approve this new job description for the FY22 Salary Plan.
