Title

Incorporated County of Los Alamos Ordinance No. 02-369 an Ordinance Amending the Code of Ordinances of the Incorporated County of Los Alamos by Adding to Chapter 38, Traffic and Vehicles, a New Article XV Relating to Automated Speed Cameras

Recommended Action

I introduce, without prejudice, Incorporated County of Los Alamos Ordinance No. 02-369 an Ordinance Amending the Code of Ordinances of the Incorporated County of Los Alamos by Adding to Chapter 38, Traffic and Vehicles, a New Article XV Relating to Automated Speed Cameras.

County Manager's Recommendation

The County Manager recommends that Council introduce this Ordinance.

Body

The Los Alamos Police seeks to add to Chapter 38, Traffic and Vehicles, a New Article XV Relating to Automated Speed Cameras. Chapter 38 of the Code of the Incorporated County of Los Alamos governs Traffic and Vehicles.

 

The purpose of this ordinance is:  the County Council finds that there is a significant risk to the health and safety of the community from drivers who exceed the posted speed limit; the County has a serious injury rate resulting from speeding violations within Los Alamos County; and some drivers in the County repeatedly violate posted speed limits.

 

Proposed Public Hearing Scheduled on: April 8, 2025.

Council could decide not to Introduce Ordinance No. 02-369.

Fiscal and Staff Impact/Unplanned Item

The revenue generated from fines will be allocated to the Los Alamos County to support traffic and safety programs, in accordance with state law. If the Ordinance is passed, a budget option to implement the initial program costs would be presented to Council for consideration.  Estimated initial hardware, software, and administrative costs are approximately $300,000.  The revenue generated from the program will be allocated to Los Alamos County to support traffic and safety programs, in accordance with state law.
