Title

Incorporated County Of Los Alamos Resolution No. 19-06 A Resolution Adjusting Precinct Boundaries In The Incorporated County Of Los Alamos, New Mexico

Recommended Action

I move that Council adopt Incorporated County Of Los Alamos Resolution No. 19-06 A Resolution Adjusting Precinct Boundaries In The Incorporated County Of Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Body

Due to recently passed legislation (HB 407), which affected the Election Code, the County Council is required to adjust a precinct if the precinct has had more than seven hundred fifty (750) votes cast by voters of that precinct at a general election based on the two most recent general elections. (1-3-1 and 1-3-5 NMSA)

Within the two most recent general elections precincts 6, 11, 15, and 16, have each had over seven hundred fifty (750) votes cast in their respective precincts.

2016 General Election                                          2018 General Election

Precinct 6    -  1,051                                                               Precinct 6    -  966

Precinct 11  -  780                                                               Precinct 11  -  731

Precinct 15  -  1,361                                                               Precinct 15  -  1,275

Precinct 16  -  1,074                                                               Precinct 16  -  1,014

Accordingly, these precincts are required to be adjusted. The map attached to the Resolution references the new precincts. Consequently, the precincts have also been renumbered to better flow in sequential order. These precinct adjustments will not take effect until January 1, 2020. Therefore, in early 2020, the County Clerk's Office will send a mailing to every registered voter explaining the precinct adjustments and providing information on the 2020 Election Cycle.

In addition, County Clerk Maestas will notify the New Mexico Secretary of State in writing of any changes in precincts made by the County Council and shall furnish the current geographical boundaries, designation, and word description for each precinct.

Alternatives

No alternatives are suggested as this requirement is pursuant to the provisions of the Election Code.
