Title

Los Alamos County Airport Art

Recommended Action

I move that the APP Board make a recommendation to the Los Alamos County Council to place “Moonrise Shiprock” with a narrow black canvas, wooden stretcher bars, and a maple frame, by Patricia Gould and commission a custom piece of recycles fiber art by Lindsay Brenner, for art in the Los Alamos County Airport.

Body

The Los Alamos County Airport has undergone renovations and has requested that the APP Board consider looking for “soft” art that will reduce the echo in the building. At the September 2021 APP meeting, the board agreed to change their focus of finding art for North Mesa to start the process of finding soft art for the Los Alamos County Airport. At the Oct. 2021 meeting, Abigayle took the lead on this project and is going to reach out to “friends” who know about fiber art. At the Nov. 2021 APP meeting, the board agreed to proceed with a Call for Art with this project in January.

The official Call for Art went out March 29, 2022 and is scheduled to run until April 29, 2022, so far the APP board has received 10 submissions, some with multiple entries from artists.

One June 8th the Board held a special session to review all the submissions received. The board selected 5 artists that they would like to pursue further with additional information. The 5 artists, Patricia Gould, Valentina Devine, Maria Jonsson, Donna Foley, and Lindsay Brenner, will be given the opportunity to present additional information of their proposals at this July 28thAPP Board meeting.

At the regularly scheduled July 28th meeting, presentations were heard from all five potential artists for the airport space. The special session meeting for today, Aug. 4th was requested by the board, so that selections can be made, while presentations were still fresh. Selections to move forward were “Moonrise Shiprock” with a narrow black canvas, wooden stretcher bars, and a maple frame measuring 36” x 26” x 2”, with acrylic covering, costing $2,900, by Patricia Gould and recycled fiber art utilizing pieces of cloth from the Los Alamos Community, and costing between $1,500 -1,800, by Lindsay Brenner.

The survey was created and has been collecting responses since Aug. 5th, 2022 for two pieces of Art, one by Patricia Gould and one by Lindsay Brenner. The Art in Public Places Board took turns gathering in-person input at the Sept. 8th Los Alamos Farmer’s Market and the survey closed Sept. 12, 2022.
